The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), widely acknowledged to be one of the fastest growing churches in the world is Enoch Adejare Adeboye, CON; a pastor, a mathematician, an author, and a spiritual father to millions including presidents, governors and several notable personalities across the globe.

Born on 2nd March 1942 in Ifewara, Osun State.

Following his primary education at the only missionary school in his village and subsequent graduation from Ilesha Grammar School, he began his tertiary studies at the University of Nsukka. However, due to the outbreak of the Nigerian civil war, he had to transit to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) where in 1967, he bagged his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics. It was that same year he married Foluke Adenike Adeboye. He then went on to obtain his Master’s Degree in Hydrodynamics in 1969 and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics in 1975. Both of these post graduate degrees were earned at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Furthermore, he holds the position of Professor of Mathematics at UNILAG.

Before joining RCCG, the ambition of Dr Adeboye, as he was called then, was to become the youngest Vice-Chancellor in Nigeria. As a first step towards fulfilling this ambition, he worked as a lecturer of Mathematics at the Universities of Lagos and Ilorin.

In 1973, Adeboye became a member of RCCG and was soon called upon to interprete for Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, the founder who could only preach in Yoruba. In 1975, he was ordained as a pastor, and in 1981, he became the General Overseer of the RCCG, following Pa Akindayomi’s death.

At the time of his predecessor’s death, the church had only 39 branches, all in the South-West part of Nigeria but the church has since planted its roots in over 197 countries of the world, with 20,000 parishes worldwide as of 2015. A feat quite incredible but very much in line with Pastor Adeboye’s vision to plant a church within five minutes walk in every city and town of developing countries and within five minutes drive in every city and town of developed countries.

Apart from its vast congregation, RCCG which he leads, boasts of bible colleges, several primary and secondary schools under the Christ the Redeemer’s School Management (CRM), Redeemer’s University, a TV station – Dove Television, numerous publications and the huge Redemption Camp in Ogun State. As a way of inspiring his congregation and all those who like to listen to him, he’s fond of recalling how the Camp came about. Coming from Ilorin where he was a highly respected young lecturer with the world at his feet, he had given up his large official residence and all the lovely perks that came with his position, to assume the position of General Overseer of what at that time was a small and relatively unknown church, with headquarters in Ebute Meta, Lagos. The official Ilorin mansion had at once been replaced by a one room apartment in Lagos. One day, as he cried out to God to have mercy and provide him with a more befitting dwelling, he heard God’s voice loud and clear. God said, “you’re asking me for a house but I will give you a city”. That city is what we now know as Redeemed Camp.

The 3km by 3km auditorium at the Camp has a seating capacity of 3 million and is listed by Wikipedia as the largest auditorium in the world but according to the world famous church preacher, the world hasn’t seen anything yet.

In the area of philanthropy, RCCG often blazes the trail. Between March 2018 and December 2018, the church implemented 30,626 philanthropic projects across the country and on Christmas day in the same year, distributed food packs to over 50 million people in 197 countries. In support of the Lagos State government’s effort to protect it’s medical personnel in various hospitals RCCG donated 8,000 hand sanitizers, 8,000 Surgical face masks and 200,000 hand gloves. It didn’t stop there however as it went ahead to donate 11 ICU beds fully fitted with Ventilators in Lagos, Ogun and Plateau states.

It didn’t come as much of a surprise when Newsweek, the authoritative magazine, counted Pastor Adeboye in 2009 amongst 50 of the world’s most influential people. With a membership of 10 million worldwide, one can only imagine the reach of the church which counts the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, several State Governors and many other notable individuals amongst its members. The recognition by Newsweek magazine came barely two years after the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, chose to attend a service at London’s biggest RCCG Parish, Jesus House, to mark his 59th birthday. As he addressed the excited congregation, he remarked that there was no where else in the world he would rather have been.

Amongst many awards and honours bestowed upon Pastor Adeboye are several honorary Doctorate Degrees by both Nigerian and foreign universities; honorary citizenship and Key to the following cities in the USA; the city of Detroit (Michigan); city of Cambridge (Massachusetts); city of Baltimore (Maryland) and city of Dallas (Texas). In 2010 he was awarded the Nigerian National Honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and in 2015 he was honoured with a Certificate of Recognition by the Congress of the United States of America.

The headquarters of RCCG, founded in 1952 still remains in Ebute Meta, Lagos, where Daddy GO, as he’s endearingly called, hosts the church’s monthly Thanksgiving Service.

This Lagos Legend deserves no less a accolade.
