RICKETTS BOOSTS ENTERPRENEURSHIP IN CROSS RIVER

In pursuit of his entrepreneurial drive and commitment to catalysing business in Cross River State, the Chairman of the Board of the Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA,  Chief Akin Ricketts, has donated business items to entrepreneurs in the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State.

The items include 100 brand new bikes and sewing machines were given to enhance the value chain of their businesses, increase their profitability and also expand their businesses so that they too can in turn, employ more hands and mentor them.

Chief Ricketts while addressing the beneficiaries challenged them to leverage on this opportunity with a view to improving on their personal development as well as contributing to a virile business environment and culture in the community.

He particularly expressed satisfaction with Chief Ricketts for deciding to “teach young people how to fish rather than giving them fish”

Chief Obla said Central Senatorial District has a bursting economy which is increasingly expanding by virtue of  its centrality of location

He lauded the spirit of enterprise of Cross River youths who do not wait for what government will do for them, rather, deploying their ingenuity in creating wealth for themselves and adding, in the process, value for the community.

Beneficiaries of the scheme were full of praises for the donor, Chief Ricketts.

The chairman of the occasion and former Chairman, Presidential Task Force on Recovery of Property, Chief Okoi Ofem Obono Obla commended Chief Ricketts for his thoughtfulness to give back to society.

The honour was in recognition of their personal accomplishments and their contribution to the development of the Yakurr nation While Dr. Ofem Enang was honoured with Obol Nkummor of Yakurr, Balimwor Ofoegobi was honoured with Obol Mkpeli 1 of Yakurr Dr. Enang’s title is literally translated as the comforter or giver of succour to the needy and to those in danger; while Balibwor’s is the one who brings growth and progress While appreciating the Obol Lopon and all the chiefs for the honour, the two recipients said it was a call to duty and more work. Dr Ofem Enang is a Chief C o n s u l t a n t  P h y s i c i a n / Endocrinologist with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and a member of the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Class of 2015/2016 of the Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA with a Certificate in Clinical Research (Clinical Trial Specialization).

He graduat

ed in 1992 with MBBCH from the University of Calabar and did his internship between 1992 and 1994 at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar. He obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2009 from the University of Lagos. He also holds the prestigious Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical

College (FMCP) in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) and Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) He was the best student in Physics,  Chemistry and Biology in the Lower Sixth Form at the Federal School of Arts and Science, Ogoja in 1986 where was also a Hall Head and later Senior Prefect before leaving for the University of Calabar. At the University of Calabar, he was President of the Calabar University Medical Students Association (CUMSA) in 1990 and Vice President of the Nigerian Medical Students Association (NIMSA).

He was President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-UCTH), President of the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD), and Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Cross River State, (20102012). He was a Board Member of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Uyo, from May 2013- July 2015. He served as the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC T&R) in charge of Training and Research at UCTH and he is the immediate Past Second Vice President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

Dr Enang is widely travelled and has attended several professional courses and workshops around the world, including the United States of America, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Netherlands, and India. Other countries visited areSouth Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Malaysia and Ethiopia among others. He has published several papers in reputable peer reviewed journals to date. He is a member of the Nigerian Medical Association, a member of t h e B r i t i s h S o c i e t y o f Endocrinology (BSE), the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE), and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). Other Associations include Endocrine Society based in the United States of America, and the Endocrine and Metabolism Society of Nigeria (EMSON).

He has been involved in several philanthropic activities at a personal level supporting indigent students and has undertaken free medical missions and health education activities as part of service to community. One of such Medical Missions was at the instance of the Ugep Country Club in Ugep, He is married to Kate Ofem Enang (nee Christopher Eteng) and they have three lovely children. He loves reading, travelling and watching football. He was Captain of the Medical School Football Team in his time at the University.

Balinwor Ofoegobi is a top bureaucrat on the employ of the Cross River State government where he serves as a Director. He started his career as a lecturer in the university of Calabar before joining the now defunct Mercantile Bank of Nigeria, and eventually joined the development community working in some World Bank-funded projects.
